Consumers have been urged by Sainsbury's head of cards to review their finances and take advantage of any good credit card deals offered by providers in the UK.
Donald McLeod said that people should have a look at the market to see if there are better deals open to them and try to pay more than the minimum payment when looking to reduce debts built up on cards.
He added that other products may also have incentives which are more suited to their needs.
"A lot of cards now have rewards on them Nectar for example
.If you want to take advantage of the January sales then look to getting a card that has a reward to it as well," he explained.
Mr McLeod's comments on reducing debt after Christmas have come after research by Apacs predicted that consumers would spend £53 billion over the festive period.
The research also claimed that around two thirds of that sum would be paid out through credit and debit cards.
